May this Fine Line Friday find you in good form! It’s been a couple of busy months since we last visited, so let’s start with two timely topics…
Before Mother’s Day gets too far behind us, I want to share SNL’s take on the day. I only hope you didn’t get your mom one of those cute and punny signs they seem to be selling everywhere. Or at least not one of these…
If you enjoy May the 4th, Star Wars, and/or the work of Wes Anderson, you might also enjoy this fan-made fake movie trailer—a mashup retelling of Star Wars through the lens of Wes Anderson.
And speaking of mashups…
For me, one of the best parts of putting this newsletter together is discovering true artists who might otherwise not cross my radar. That’s the case with DJ Cummerbund, also known as “The Mashup Messiah.” He’s an artist from Long Island well known for mixing and mashing unlikely music tracks that somehow seem to fit together perfectly. It was a Beyonce/Beatles mashup (yes, you read the right) that first found me. You can find that, as well as others, in this article on Open Culture. Or just visit his website.
While it might not speak well of me, one of my all-time favorite movies is Team America: World Police–a comedy/action movie performed completely by puppets. It’s from the makers of South Park, and yes, you don’t want to watch this movie with kids in the room… or the house… or the neighborhood really. In any case, I was intrigued when the folks at Wired introduced me to Barnaby Dixon—a former stop-motion animator who parlayed those skills into creating hand puppets that are probably unlike anything you’ve ever seen before (unless you subscribe to Barnaby’s YouTube channel). I was struck not only by the images he creates, but by his dedication to his craft. And I hope you will be too!
Regarding those busy months I mentioned earlier…
As many of you know, Fine Line produces three live television shows in the Spring, all in the span of about 5 weeks. With the hard work of our amazing crews, we successfully got all three on the air again in 2023, and in the meantime picked up a few Emmy nominations for last year’s shows. If you’d like to get a taste of what we most recently made, you can see the sizzle reel for this year’s Georgia Tech InVenture Prize here. And Fine Line’s social media guru, Jack, put together a couple of creative behind-the-scenes videos for The ACC InVenture Prize and The Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards. Thanks, Jack!
And thank you for being a part of the Fine Line family. I truly appreciate all of our clients, vendors, and the amazing work we all get to do together. I hope we’ll be doing even more of that work again soon. Until then, May you keep… Feeling Fine!
